The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) was signed into law in December 2015 and went into effect on January 1, 2016. In addition to transferring more authority from the federal government to states and districts in areas such as accountability, educator evaluations, and school improvement, ESSA legislation significantly changed the federal grants landscape.
