The Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents (ALAS) has observed a nationwide challenge among districts, administrators, and other K-12 education decision-makers to address and treat the symptoms of students’ social-emotional and wellness needs, over a methodical examination of underlying root causes. ALAS commissioned Hanover Research (Hanover) to conduct a national survey of Latino/a students in the 2021-2022 school year and identified the specific needs of this student population. As an extension of the study, ALAS partnered with Hanover to provide district and school leaders with resources and tools to support Latino/a students in the 2022-2023 school year.
This toolkit is designed to support teachers in better understanding the symptoms and causes of mental illness and promoting students’, particularly Latinos/as, overall mental wellness. The toolkit also provides teachers with guidance and tools to better support those students with diagnosed mental illness.
