As school district leaders open the 2021-2022 academic school year, it is important to focus on fostering and maintaining a positive school climate. A majority of staff and students experienced disruptions in learning and teaching in the 2020-2021 school year that resulted in negative impacts on equitable access to resources and the social-emotional well-being of students and staff. Recognizing these challenges, the federal government recently released ESSER funding for improving SEL supports within schools.
A key component of focusing on student’s social-emotional well-being and mental health requires district leaders to ensure their students feel safe, connected, and engaged in their learning.
